Model keeps flipping 180 degrees when i attach to motion path.

I’ve created a model car and want it to follow a motion path. But every time I attach it to the path and play it, the car turns 180 degrees and goes along the path backwards. I’ve tried many things but I don’t know what to do.

Hi!

Just change the orientation of your model (rotate pivot and bake pivot).

Another thing that might be causing trouble it is your path direction. Try selecting your path, then going to Curves> Reverse Direction. Once that is done, try re-applying your attach to motion path, and see if that helps.

i guess the problem is your objects front axis is not correct setup in the motionpath options.

select your object > attribute editor find motionPath and make sure the axis facing along your object is the one set in front axis, i guess its correct in your case so you will just need to check the inverse front checkbox.

Maya motion path normal flipping problem.

Hi Maya people,

I’ve encountered this problem many times before, and now I’m in a situation that I can’t seem to solve.

I have an object that I’m trying to animate over a curve by using attach to motion path and turning it into a flow path object.

The problem is that my object doesn’t follow the curve in the way that it should.

Searching the web leaves me with old forum posts that weren’t really solved, or used lingo I didn’t understand. Can anyone help me?

Thanks in advance!

Maya ‘Attach to Motion Path’ causes selected object to flip or tilt sideways when moving along curve

I’m trying to model a chainsaw low-poly game model inside of Maya LT 2018.2. I have the chainsaw blade and a piece of chain to duplicate and animate (follow) along the chainsaw blade like a real-life chainsaw would do. Similar to tank tracks as well. I have googled and youtube this issue for a few hours and found some solution but it doesn’t fix my issue I am having and now I need some help if you can provide me with so. So I will tell you the steps-by-steps I did to create the effect and problems.

  1. I selected my curve which was created by ‘Convert polygon edge to curve’ then rebuilding it with 100 spans and smooth. It’s named ‘chain_crv_02’.
  2. Also, select the chainsaw chain model (chainBlade_1).
  3. Went to Animation tab, clicked on ‘Constrain > Motion Path: Attach to Motion Path’ options (then reset tool settings). Check images for tool settings setup.

The chain model it slightly tilted then it when I move the time slider forward, it seems to be correctly positioned at the front of the chainsaw blade, then when it moves towards the bottom of the curve, it faces sideways which is incorrect. I have tried playing with twist settings in the attribute tab for the curve but I haven’t gotten any good results. I don’t understand why I’m getting this issue. Is it my curve? Does it need to be rebuilt? If so, I don’t know what settings I should use for curve rebuilding tool settings. Any other things causing this odd issue? This also seems to be a major problem for other Maya users trying to make objects using motion path but with very little help online via Google or YouTube. Any amount of help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. I will also try to reply to your comments asap.

Sometimes while using motion path, flipping is hard to avoid, here is one solution :
— motion path your main object to the path «path1» blue curve
— duplicate «path1, rename it to «path2», offset it, delete history and edit it to shows the direction pink curve
— create a locator «loc1» and motion path it to the path «path2»
— connect the Uvalue of «path1» to «path2» so they have the same speed
— in the motionpath1 attribute, set follow, object up and in the world up object field enter «loc1»

EDIT : Actually the best method is by far to use a curve on surface as motion path and choose the normal type. To create a curve on surface, first create a surface, then make it live and create a curve on it.
