Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer как исправить

  • Question

  • I’ve tried to install with a disc, from a usb all that jazz, everytime I go through ‘Windows activated setup is copying temporary files…’ then ‘Window activated setup is starting…’ then I get the same error ‘Windows could not retrieve information about the discs on the computer.

    I’ve backed up all my data so I’m good to do a clean installation, I’ve tried booting from the disc(does nothing, boots normally) and booting from the usb(I get to sit around forever staring at a flashing cursor, apparently going nowhere)

    I’m running XP Pro service pack 2, I’ve met all the requirements for 7.

    I’ve unplugged and disable all unnecessary drives and what not(floppy drive, second disc drive, etc)

    I’ve flicked through half a million pages talking about how to resolve this problem on Vista and XP, none of which helped at all, a few advised enabling the ‘Virtual Disk’ service, brilliant I apparently don’t even have that.

    Someone please save my computer from a very short flight off the top of a very tall building.

    I’m not a computer tech or anything, I’d like to think I’m pretty clued in but for conveniences sake could any advise be extremely detailed in step-by-step form, just to save me from having to make a ‘How do you get to that?’ post and someone having to reply to it.

  • Hi AlecHetho,

    Based on my experience, this error usually can occur because the VDS service is set to disabled. To resolve it,  we need to enable the “Virtual Disk” service. Please refer to the following steps:

    1)       Click Start / Run and type SERVICES.MSC

    2)       Look for the Virtual Disk Service

    3)       Right click it and choose «Properties«

    4)       Change the Startup Type to Manual, then click the Start button.

    5)       Reboot and try the upgrade again.

    If there isn’t Virtual Disk Service listed, you can take the following steps to populate the disk information:

    1)       Click Start / Run and type devmgmt.msc

    2)       Expand the Disk drives and double click the disk.

    3)       Click Volumes on  the disk Properties.

    4)       If the volumes information are blank, click Populate.

    5)       Insert the Windows 7 installation disc and launch Setup.exe

    Best Regards

    Dale

I want to upgrade to Windows 7, because i have alot of important software which would take too long to re-install, but whenever i run the setup.exe and select upgrade it runs for a few seconds and the i get the error message:
«Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer»
and the setup ends, is there a way round this?

I checked the Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and everything was normal in there, however i’ll upload the report, to see if you can find any faults.

P.S. I’ve tried 3 different releases now and all of them get the same error. Also tried burning at different speeds, different DVDs and tried installing from a virtual drive, and i still receive the same error. I also tried upgrading from booting the CD, it told me to restart the PC, let it boot into Vista and run setup.exe, which brings me back to my original problem =[

Any suggestions would be great!

I was having the same problem on an un-partitioned drive and realized that the virtual disk service had been turned off which was preventing windows from seeing the current config of the HDD. It seems the user had disabled it for performance reasons. To fix the problem follow these steps:

— Right click on computer under the start menu and chose manage
— In the computer management window click on services and scroll down to the service labeled «Virtual Disk» right click on it and chose properties.
— Under «Services status» click start then click apply and ok
— close all the windows and retry the upgrade
Good Luck

I have the same error message when I try to install Windows 7!

Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer

I feel like I could fix this problem by starting the «Virtual Disk» but no matter what option I set it on (manual, automatic. ) the «start» option is grayed out!! The status is stuck at «starting» even when I restart the computer.

I have the same stupid problem! When I put in the Windows 7 installation disk into the DVD drive and click «Install Now», it goes to a full-screen setup page, which reads:

Setup is copying temporary files.
Setup is starting.

Then an error window opens stating, «Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer.»
That’s it. No help, suggestions, no nothing! Just an «OK» button that closes the installation session completely! WTF.
This appears to be a pretty common problem for a lot of users, and should be easily identifiable and resolvable by Microsoft! Why is it happening.

And yes, I ran the Win 7 Upgrade Diagnostics first, which reported:
Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor Report
Computer Name: EDWARDO-PC
Operating System: Windows Vista Home Premium
Manufacturer: Hewlett-Packard
Model: HP G60 Notebook PC
CPU: AMD Turion Dual-Core RM-70
Memory: 2.8 GB

154.2 GB free space available on C:
Your hard disk meets the minimum requirement of 16 GB free space for 32-bit Windows 7.

Does ANYONE at Microsoft have ANY information about this and how to get past this?

Thank you,

Click on start-up type and select Automatic, then click OK.
You should then be able to click on the now not-grayed-out Start button.

But I’ve tried that already and all the start, stop options remain grayed out! Even when I set it on «automatic». The status is also stuck at «Starting».

While I have received no help or advice from Microsoft whatsoever regarding this serious installation deficiency, I have managed to get past it and successfully install Windows 7 on my laptop. If you recall, the original problem was:

When I put in the Windows 7 installation disk into the DVD drive and click «Install Now», it goes to a full-screen setup page, which reads:
— Setup is copying temporary files.
— Setup is starting.
— Then an error window opens stating, «Windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer.»

That’s it. No help, suggestions, no nothing! Just an «OK» button.

The first thing I noticed when I started poking around with my security settings was that even though I am the only user on this machine and I had given myself Administrator privileges, I still didn’t have FULL and complete admin rights to everything! 99% of the rights were there, but 1% was still being denied. So, I logged off as a user and logged back in as The Administrator.

Then I started playing around with the Vista Device Manager. I went to
Start | Control Panel | Hardware and Sound | Device Manager.

Then I selected Disk drive and double-clicked on my hard drive, which brought up the Properties window for the drive.

I clicked on the Volumes tab and noticed there was no information displayed there whatsoever. So I clicked the
Populate button, and poof. like magic all the volume information correctly appeared.

But I noticed that when I clicked the OK button, then went back into the hard drive to recheck the volume information, it was blank again! Go figure.

I don’t know if this is the the answer to everyone’s installation problems, but it worked for me, and I hope this information can help someone else too.

  • Have you installed the drivers for the disk controllers on the motherboard (most often this is for SATA/RAID/SCSI drives)?
    Consult your motherboard documentation for the appropriate driver.  Ensure that you get the most recent Vista driver if Win7 drivers aren’t available.

    I’m currently trying to install Windows 7 on my desktop running Vista.

    b. do one of the following:

    1. If your computer has a single operating system installed, press and hold the F8 key as your computer restarts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you must try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then stop and restart your computer.

    2. If your computer has more than one operating system, use the arrow keys to select the operating system you want to repair, and then press and hold F8.

    c. on the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to select repair your computer and press ENTER. (If your computer is not listed as an option, then your computer doesn’t understand no repair preinstalled recovery options, or your network administrator has disabled the.)

    Hello

    You use the installation disc for the full version or an upgrade disc?

    You can see the following link.

    http://Windows.Microsoft.com/en-us/Windows/help/install-reinstall-uninstall?SignedIn=1

    This could be a problem with your hard drive. You can contact the manufacturer of the hard drive for better assistance.

  • transition from xp to windows 7 I get windows could not retrieve information about the disks on this computer

    This means that the hard drive of your HP system controller is not supported by Windows 7 with pilots from the box and you need specific drivers to install Windows 7 on it.  If HP does not have drivers on their website then you’re probably not going to succeed.

  • Receive an error message that Windows can not retrieve information about the disk when I try to put upgraded Windows XP to Windows 7.

    XP Home to Windows 7 upgrade Peoblems

    I can’t update my laptop to windows 7, that he will enter the upgrade options, then it will say cannot retrieve information about this disk of computers. What should I do I deleted all leave them and still get this error. Thanks Chris

    It’s a little late for this, but anytime you do an upgrade, you must be sure that your computer is compatible. My guess is your drive for windows 7 is a DVD and you have a CD or a witch of CD — RW drive can not read CD

    I recently bought components in order to build a new PC in Win 7 64 bit.

    I’ve built a lot of PC in the past, don’t wait no problem that I couldn’t cope so.

    I got this this same exact error message and have been pulling on my hair for the last two weeks to try to solve.

    I even bought a new motherboard, processor and HD and got the same error. Urgghh!

    Well, when I finally realized what it was that I was so relieved and so angry at the same time!

    IT WAS THE SATA CABLE! 1

    I’ve never had a problem with a SATA cable before so I never even thought to replace.

    One who turned out to be defective was one of the thinner, but I used a lot of them in the past without incident.

    This may or may not be the cause of your problem, but try it

    Have a great Christmas and good luck for the new year

    UH sorry im not the expert. Could you me more as easier or something? And what is the cause of the error?

    Faulty installation or DVD your DVD drive is faulty.

    You do not have the ability to create a thumb / Flash drive to install Windows.

    After you download if necessary. ISO file (see my previous post, follow the step #4).

  • «Could not initialize Photoshop because the disk is not available.»?

    I’ve been happily turn Photoshop CS (1) on my Powermac MDD for years.

    But today, she is facing upward.  Here’s the problem: I get the error message «could not initialize Photoshop because the disk is not available.»

    I have studied this problem and see that it’s been covered in the thread:
    http://forums.Adobe.com/thread/370672?start=0 & tstart = 0

    So I trashed preferences and the SFW prefs also.
    Now Photoshop starts… BUT as soon as I go into the preferences and assign a scratch disk, he failed once more to throw with the same error: «could not initialize Photoshop because the disk is not available.»

    I tried to slide on the copies of the utility Photoshop of my backup disk files… but the same strange behavior persists.

    My Scratch disk is on a second internal hard drive.

    This all started when I had to restart from OS 9 order to use my SCSI scanner, which only has an OS9 driver.
    I used it for years with no problem… until today.

    Was it because once I saved the file in Photoshop 4 and OS9 on an OSX file that somehow the preferences got screwed up?

    Popular clues…

    work drive must be HFS +.

    also check the permissions of the property in the Infolog to get for the reader scratching. You may need to ignore permissions for this volume.

    Hello

    1 have had any changes made to the computer before the show?

    Please follow the steps in the link.

    Important: before you perform an upgrade in-place, you must be prepared for the worst scenarios that led to your existing data on your computer being deleted. These data include data personal, settings, information about the hardware and software drivers. In case of a worst case scenario, you may have to reinstall all the programs. Make sure that you back up personal data to disks or other external storage devices before performing an upgrade on the spot.

  • Non-compliant WMI when retrieving information about the same exact machine

    For some time, WMI has reported the following information some machine:
    Win32_ComputerSystemModel = «HP EliteBook 8560p.
    Win32_ComputerSystemManufacturer = «Hewlett-Packard».

    One day, WMI has reported the following:
    Win32_ComputerSystemModel = «161A___».
    Win32_ComputerSystemManufacturer = «HPQOEM».

    A few days later, WMI is returned for having reported the usual:
    Win32_ComputerSystemModel = «HP EliteBook 8560p.
    Win32_ComputerSystemManufacturer = «Hewlett-Packard».

    I don’t have the machine and the user can not explain what might cause WMI retrieve various information.

    How to get Windows in a State where it is retrieved different information about the same PC?
    Is there a way to ‘reset’ WMI so it retrieves information constantly?

    What similar (and different) for prior experience (different machines).

    The usual case is:
    Win32_ComputerSystemUserName = DOM-user
    where:
    DOM is the domain of the user (in uppercase)
    the user is the user name (all lowercase)

    But sometimes WMI recovered:
    Win32_ComputerSystemUserName = DOM- USER
    where:
    the username was all uppercase.   Apparently caused when the machine into hibernation

    or

    Win32_ComputerSystemUserName = DOM- dom -user
    where:
    the field of user uppercase followed by domain user in all lowercase letters.  Never explained.

    I use WMI to develop an ID for purposes of the license, so it is extremely important that WMi systematically extract information.

    The problem with username is solvable.

    However, the model with randomness and Manfacturer seem more problematic.

    Thank you!!!

  • Windows could not start after activating the boot.

    Hi all

    I have a very serious problem.

    A few lost technology from Microsoft asked that I have to do the following:

    http://support.Microsoft.com/kb/929135.

    Immediately after the restart, I was confronted with the following message:

    Windows could not start.

    Status: 0xc000000e

    Info: A required device is not connected or is not accessible.

    Startup Repair does not work. -Root cause found: the partition table has not a Sys component validates.

    System Restore does not work — the system cannot find the specified file (0 x 80070002)

    Bootrec — rebuildbcd works no item was not found.

    Bootcfg does not work — could not open the TRUNK. INI file.

    Bcdedit does not work — the requested system device cannot be found.

    GParted does not work — cannot load the ntfs module: invalid argument.

    How can it be fixed, please?

    It is an extremely urgent situation which must be resolved immediately, because I use this computer for work and need to return to work on a large commercial project Monday. Forget the original question that MS tech was trying to ‘help’ with, everything what I need now is to be able to get into Windows, or even just make this record available and accessible on the LAN computer.

    Hi all, thank you for the advice.

    Problem has been resolved after a cold start.

    HP do not provide a download for this utility.

    You can order a set of replacement recovery disks using the link below and use them to reinstall the original OS.
