To change the update channel for an existing install, proceed as follows:

  1. Open the Preferences window by clicking File > Settings (on Mac, Android Studio > Preferences).
  2. In the left panel, click Appearance & Behavior > System Settings > Updates.
  3. Be sure that Automatically check for updates is checked, then select a channel from the drop-down list (see figure).
  4. Click Apply or OK.

I needed to free up some disk space so I deleted my C:ADT folder because I assumed it was from my old android eclipse days. Now when I open android studio it says «please provide the path to the android sdk» with a link that takes me to the android studio dowload page. The only down load items I see there are android studio and sdk tools. I’ve tried uninstalling / reinstalling android studio, but the problem still persisted. I’ve also tried downloading sdk-tools-windows-3859397.zip from that the android studio download site but android studio didn’t recognize the sdk when I pointed it to the extracted contents with «The selected directory is not a valid home for Android SDK»

When I click on «SDK Manager» icon in android studio, It opens, but when I check anything to download, it says «Your Android SDK is missing, out of date or corrupted. Clicking «Open SDK Manager» opens literally the same window again.

Also possibly relevant: I have to install Android Studio as a different user (with admin rights) than the user that I use to run Android studio.

Turns out this was related to the fact that I had to install Android Studio as a different user (with admin rights) than my normal windows account.

After trying all the steps outlined in my question, I tried running android studio as my special admin rights user account, and it provided a special start up screen that prompted me to download the android sdk for the first time. I didn’t get that startup screen when running as my normal windows user, just got the errors as indicated in the question.

Note that when I was prompted to install the sdk, I selected «custom» install so that my android sdk would be installed into a common area and not in the private app data area for my admin user account. Then when I ran as my normal user, I was able to select that same location for the android SDK.

I ran into the same problem. When Android Studio started it loaded an old project I had been working on a long time ago. I closed that project, and then Android Studio realized that the SDK wasn’t installed and went ahead installing it. So a fix could be to try to close any open solution.

if you need only android sdk tools and don’t want to download android studio all over again then go to this link, https://developer.android.com/studio/#downloads

scroll down to command line tools and download the sdk. It’s a 132 mb file.

I had the same issue but the fix was simple. THe install directory where the SDK should go didn’t exist. I created a new SDK folder and the problem was solved.

Error SDK Problem — Your Android SDK is missing out of date or corrupted

I recently ran into the Android Studio SDK Problem «Your Android SDK is missing, out of date or corrupted» while starting my newly installed Android Studio 4.0. When I clicked on «Open SDK Manager» it opened the prompt on installed packages but didn’t let me select anything. So I had to restart my Android Studio and it took me back to the «Android Studio Setup Wizard» and eventually had to install all the required packages like the below

Solution: It seems like while I was installing the Android Studio afresh I had internet problems that failed to download the above-required packages. This issue got resolved after downloading them. I hope it helps someone!

I just installed Android Studio on Ubuntu 16.04 and I can’t open it.
When the welcome page of android studio opens I click on Start a new Android Studio project and it says Your Android SDK is missing, out of date or corrupted.
I downloaded the last version of SDK Tools from android studio webpage and tried to add it to sdk manager but it says: Target folder is neither empty nor does it point to an existing SDK installation…
I don’t know what to do now..! :((

I had the same problem and I solved it by following these steps:

  1. Go to android studio and then go to configure option on the bottom of the window.
  2. Go to ‘project default’ option in that option and click on project structure option.
  3. Change the SDK location to your sdk location. (If you get errors such as your location not a platforms you must go to your sdk location and make an empty folder and rename it to ‘platforms’. Then you must repeat this steps.)

Note:this error may arise when your sdk folder not a ‘platforms’ folder and you must make an empty folder and rename it to ‘platforms’. platforms folder must be in the sdk folder.

The current direct link for SDK Tools package is (2018-12-31): https://dl.google.com/android/repository/sdk-tools-linux-4333796.zip.
But, as others have already said in other responses to similar questions on SO, the best way is to let Android Studio handle the installation, because it will install other useful apps, too (emulator, platform tools, etc).
In my case, I wasn’t connected to the internet when I first started Android Studio, so I got stuck at the same error.
After removing the ~/.AndroidStudio3.2 folder and a ./studio.sh restart, it asked me to download all the necessary apps (note: the dowload has ~1GB!) and then Android Studio started flawlessly!

  3. Be sure that Automatically check for updates is checked, then select a channel from the drop-down list (see figure).
  4. Click Apply or OK.

  • I tried to install android studio after installing Java SE 9 version an get this error
    enter image description here

  • describe the way, please

  • I didn’t have a «download» button, but clicking «next» in the wizard view worked for me.

  • Very odd, the regular SDK manager flow was just looping giving the above error. Follow these steps and it magically works. I think stuff was a little confused due to a recent Windows reset install.
